Terrarium Ideas
Points to ponder
Terrariums can he heated for desert and semi-desert species. Heat and humidity controls regulate tropical or temperate climates. A damp woodland environment can be simulated, as well as a flowing and filtered body of water. The adult size of the terrarium pets and plants determine the terrarium size. A tiny lizard could be comfortable in a one-foot cube. Turtle terrariums and snake terrariums should be 2x1x1; an eight-foot boa would need three times the space. Combining species in a terrarium can lead to trouble, and should not be attempted by beginners. As a rule, it is best to limit pets to two species in one terrarium layout. Plain and simple: some species eat other species or coexist poorly. | |
Terrarium categories
- Rock terrariums are composed of potting sand, rocks, and ground cover-type plants. These make excellent reptile terrariums, best suited for small lizards.
- Desert terrariums are similar to rock terrariums, but the temperature drops quite a bit at night. Cacti and succulents thrive in this environment. Spiny lizards, bearded dragons, desert tarantulas, blue-tongued skinks, desert-striped whip snakes, some scorpions, and box turtles are at home in this setting.
- Swamp terrariums contain a great deal of water and are suited for species that live on the ground, like some frogs and turtles, salamanders, and newts.
- Tropical rainforest terrariums provide a warm and humid environment, conducive to the growth of ferns, orchids, and bromeliads. These make good frog/toad terrariums and also work well with small insect-eating snakes, geckos, and some turtles.
- Woodland terrariums consist of soil, dead limbs, pinecones, bark, leaves, assorted plants, and a body of fresh water. Woodland ecosystems make good insect and reptile terrariums. Scorpions, birds, snakes, turtles, chameleons, and some tarantulas exist well in this milieu.
- Plant terrariums bring summer into the house year round. Decorator-size and -shape terrariums are available. The only concern when mixing plants is that the soil mixture is nourishing to all the plants within the system.
