Terrarium Plants

One of the nicest things about growing plants in terrariums is that they require almost no care at all, and they actually almost thrive on neglect! That's what makes terrariums perfect for those without much time on their hands, or if those hands lack green thumbs.

A great thing about terrarium plants is that there are so many to choose from! First, you should know a little background about the plant so that it doesn't eventually outgrow or overcrowd your terrarium. Ideally, terrarium plants should be dense and low growing, as well as slow growing. If you decide to go with larger, more aggressive plants, they can be kept under control by pruning.

Remember, any plant that you choose must have a high tolerance for humidity and moisture. Choose terrarium plants for their size, texture, color and adaptability. Also important, of course, is choosing terrarium plants that will add beauty and serenity to your home. Here's a sample of plants that are ideal for terrariums:

Where will my terrarium plants be happy?
You'll want to make sure that your terrarium isn't sitting in the sun, as terrarium plants will generally favor bright light as opposed to direct sunlight. An area where it's comfortable to read during the day without any lights on is a pretty good indicator of a good spot for your terrarium.

A few extra tid-bits to remember about your terrarium plants:

• Remove any diseased or insect-damaged leaves before putting plants into the terrarium.
• Soil should be high in organic matter, and only needs to be watered about every 4 to 6 months.
• Always make sure to water your terrarium plants lightly - it's better for soil to be a little dry, rather than too wet.
• Rocks, wood and other decorative items can be added to accentuate your terrarium plants.
